For scholars writing books in the humanities and social sciences.
Forthcoming is run by me, Dr Simon Ferdinand. With a decade’s experience as a developmental editor and as a published author myself, I help scholars frame book projects so that their work reaches publishers in its strongest possible form.
Tell me where things stand with your book project and we can discuss the best way forward.
I am Dr Simon Ferdinand. For a decade I have run a small writing and editing consultancy, working with hundreds of scholars at every career stage and from across the humanities and social sciences. Engaging closely with all genres of academic writing, I have helped scholars develop their voice and arguments, secure funding, submit dissertations, and bring complex projects to publication.
Alongside this, I am a scholar of visual culture and the environmental humanities. I received my PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2017, where I later held a prestigious Veni fellowship from the Dutch Research Council. I have taught at the University of Warwick, Amsterdam University College, and the University of Amsterdam.
As the author of two monographs and coeditor of three volumes with major academic presses, I have long experience of navigating scholarly publishing. I have received my share of rejections from publishers and have learned from each of them, developing different ways of framing projects and approaching editors.
You do not need a consultant to publish a book. Many excellent books reach print through persistence alone. What I offer is an experienced outside eye, helping scholars navigate the uncertainty of submission and giving projects a greater chance of advancing to print.
